Soft Rock Video Analysis

P!nk - So What

  • Singing directly into the camera makes the lyrics more powerful and the emotion being felt by the artist appears stronger. This is an inpirational piece of camerawork and performance for my music video creation; for example, if the artist is seen singing directly into the camera whilst crying it will look more emotional than crying whilst singing and looking into the distance/past the camera

  • The use of bright colours makes it seem amusing and takes away the agression in the performance. This is key to remember when creating my music video - high key lighting and bright primary colours makes it uplifting and amusing, dark colours and low key lighting makes it emotional and a sense of anger arises

  • The artist is also the performer which makes the lyrics more meaningful, I will be using this technique to make the audience realise the strength of emotion that the artist is feeling as well as the meaning behind the lyrics

  • It is often in this music video that there is a use of low angle shots which make the artists appear in power and reinforce the feeling of aggression behind the lyrics and actions in the video. For a sad and emotional song that I will be creating with my group we will be doing the opposite to this - a high angle shot to make the artist seem vulnerable and weak.

Foo Fighters - Walk

  • The narrative begins before the song does - this sets the scene and the mood of the song as well as any emotions the artist may be feeling when the song is being sung. This could be used in my music video to add extra depth and set the scene of the music video narrative

  • The situation being shown is relatable, this makes the audience feel connected with the song and understanding of the anger and the need to shout. This is influencial for my music video creation so that I do not create a music video that is not relatable and the audience don't connect with - a connection with the video will make the emotions felt by the audience become stronger and therefore enjoy the video more than if there were to not connect with it

  • The code of dress of the character shows him as a very "normal" person in black and white, making him blend in and become of of the masses - vulnerable with no power. However, his code of dress is masking his true personality which is shown at the end. This shows how important code of dress is when conveying a message and how stereotypical the audience are as soon as they see the presentation of a person. I will need to ensure that the conde of dress perfectly shows the character in the way I wish for it to

You Me At Six - Loverboy

  • The mise-en-scene is made up of dark colours - red and black - red symbolises blood and danger and black symbolises death. This anchors the dark and aggressive lyrics and way in which they are sung. I find this influencial as it shows how much meaning is behind colours and that black can be so symbolic of negative feelings

  • When in the police station all the band members are seen through a window which makes them all seem very small and vulnerable, this is when the lighting is much brighter. However, when they are seen playing their instruments and singing they are taking up a lot of camera space and are seen to be much more comfortable in their surroundings. Opposites are key to use in this genre of music, especially if a song is written about a negative time as it shows the feelings when reflecting back on it as well as what was felt when in the situation. The audience have a lot to think about and the speed of the song makes emphasises this as well as the fast cuts and short shots. This would be an influencial technique if I was to create a music video for this genre of music, however I do not feel that it would be relevant

  • Close ups show the anger on the artists faces which is highlighted by slow motion which is added in post-production. This is a reminder to me for my final creation that close ups show so much emotion and that post-production can be effective in emphasising this.

Mallory Knox - Ghost In The Mirror

  • It has become apparent that a convention for this genre of music videos to include slow motion. In this case it is to emphasis the rapid playing of the instruments - I will be influenced by this for another reason. I will use slow motion to show more sad emotion in a piece of footage rather than to make it look more harsh/the emotion of anger

  • There is disporportionatly more footage of the performance rather than the narrative. This could be used in my music video creation to show the meaning behind the lyrics coming from the artist

  • Dark colours are used to make some of the footage look more mennacing or mysterious and it leaves the audience unknowing. The unknowing feeling is anchored by quick, short shuts with edit cuts. This is also used to work closely with the tempo of the song which is fast. This influences my decisions and I will therefore make sure that each shot is long to work with the slow soul music that my group and I am creating a music video for
