Magazine Advertisement Planning

I have added an image of the artist on the left hand page becuase, according to Todorov's reading gravity theory, we look from left to right and top to bottom on a magazine. Therefore the audience will see the image of James Bay initially and then continue to read the advertisement once their attention has been caught

A close up shot allows the audience to identify with James Bay, pictured

The articles' title mentions the artists' name with catches the audiences' attention as well as a play on words of the song title my group and I have chosen to create a music video for

The strapline summarises the article and encourages the audeince to read on to find out more

The use of a dropcap is a convention in magazine advertisements / articles

The pull quote draws the audiences' attention to it; because it is only a snippet it encourages them to read more of the article

Some key dates for the artists' tour will attract the attention of the reader. It also allows the reader to fully understand what the person pictured on the left is selling/advertising (no information is given away from a close up shot)

An image of the artist playing infront of a crowd allows the reader to understand what the person pictured does and encourages them to buy a ticket for his tour as they will envy those pictured in the audience as they are seen enjoying themselves

I was soon to realise the brief was not to create a double page magazine advertisement with an interview/story and so I began drafting a new idea which is shown below.

I looked through the images I had taken at the shoot and began editing images. Initially I chose a completely different image which I began to loathe, however, I am glad I made this error as it allowed me to begin using Photoshop for the first time and trying each feature to become familiar with it.

Production

1st Edit: I firstly removed the man that was in the background of the image. I did this by using the clone stamp tool.

3rd Edit: I altered brightness by using the curves and brightness/contrast adjustments

5th Edit: I trialled the image in black and white to see if it added more depth and a miserable feeling, however I did not like this and so I removed it.

7th Edit: I began looking at typographies and where to place the text.

9th Edit: I altered the typography. I like this as it is dainty which suggests how vulnerable the character/James Bay (this is anchored by the music video). The colour is very calming, similar to the name of the album that is being advertised.

Edit 11: I added the name of the artist to the top left corner, this is because of Todorov's reading gravity suggesting that the reader will firstly look in the top left. The popular and well known, successful name will keep the audience interested.

Edit 13: I made the colour of the typography - "JAMES BAY" to maket clearer among the trees. As well as this I removed the opacity over the reflected image and made the reflected image a slightly different colour to make it clearer that it is a reflection.

2nd Edit: I removed the big clumps of mud that were on the actors shoes by using the clone stamp tool and brushes.

4th Edit: I increased the brightness around his eyes so the audience could identify with him. I did this by using the clone stamp tool, curves, brightness/contrast and the spot healing brush tool. As well as this I removed a spot on his face using the spot healing brush.

6th Edit: I duplicated the image and rotated it to create a reflection. This symbolised the James Bay thinking deeply about his decisions and life with/without his girlfriend that is shown in the music video.I then made it transparent using the opacity as well as changing the gradient so it appears faded.

8th Edit: I was unsure whether to 'release' the poster advertising the Let It Go EP or the entire album it was released on. I noticed that writing 'ALBUM OUT NOW' was more central and looked more realistic.

10th Edit: I looked into placing the text in the middle, this would reveal more of the mirrored image.

Edit 12: I have added in a slight transparency to the reversed image. I did this by altering the opacity.

Edit 14: I moved the name of the artist away from the tree as it was still not easy enough to read. Then I added a line under the title of the album, this draws attention to it as it is not underlined as well as in a bright colour and capitals. Finally I added two star ratings to make it more conventional.
