Rock Music

Rock music became popular in the 1960s when it evolved from rock and roll and pop music. The harsh and loud music is focussed on the instruments however the lyrics are to have a lot of meaning behind them - drug related and anti establishment lyrics - trying to appeal to the younger audience and point them in the right direction for a successful and bright future. Rock is known for the use of instruments such as electric guitars and electric bass guitars as well as drums.

The Rolling Stones were an English rock band formed in 1962 who became very popular in 1965 after the release of the album "The Rolling Stones, Now!" which reached number 5 in the charts. The band even had their own film made which was shelved for 28 years before being released on DVD in 2004 - this shows that the band's popularity has continued for over 50 years.

Rock is a very personal music choice and so it does not appeal to as much of a wide variety of music as other genres do for example soul, therefore it would be a challenge to create a music video that appealed to everyone because the music is not to their taste. Due to this I do not think that I will create a music video for a song of this genre, as well as this, a lot of rock bands are very iconic and it would be incredibly difficult to find singers to mime the words as well as musicians who can play the instruments successfully and believably in my music video.

Music Video Conventions

  • Dark colours are generally used in rock music videos, such as black and red. These colours connote danger and death so the music videos can come across fearful when partnered with often some heavy and loud singing from the artist. I do not think that I will create a music video for this genre of music, however this is a useful technique to know so that I do not include to many dark colours which make a emotional/happy song come across as one that is connoting danger

  • There is a lot more screen time for the artist rather than the narrative in comparison to other genres of music videos such as soul. I like this because the audience are able to connect with the artist more and get to see more of them which is who they are most interested in; therefore when creating my music video I might go against the conventions of the genre that I choose and take this technique forward with the creation

  • Hand held camera movement is often used which makes the audience connect with the artists as it makes them feel as if they are there with the band and have a connection with them, this could be a useful technique to include in my music video to ensure the uses and gratification of personal relationships are felt throughout the music video
