Pop Video Analysis

McFly - Love Is Easy

  • The mise-en-scene ties in and works closely with the lyrics, this makes it an amusing performance and uplifting to the audience. This is something I would like to use in my music video as it prevents leaving the audience with a sombre feeling which is important in influencing them in their everyday lives

  • The performance is the same as the narrative - there is no seperation by edit cuts or a change of location; instead the location in bought to the performance. This will influence my music video creation as I would like to successfully make the performance and the narrative work together in the same shot

  • The introduction uses low key lighting which makes it mysterious. especially as it is partnered with the unknowing sound of footsteps. This makes the audience unknowing of what will follow in the music video as it is mysterious. This is contradictory to the rest of the music video but it is an influencial piece of the music video as it shows how important lighting is when conveying a message. The rest of the music video is in very high key lighting which anchors the amusement.

  • Handheld camerawork is used when following the musician up the stairs to the stage making the audience feel as if they are there watching the performance, this makes it a more personal production. This could be influencial if my group and I want to make the narrative emotional; if they feel as if they are there or that they have a connection with the people in the video then the storyline will feel more "real" and therefore more emotional

Ed Sheeran - Small Bump

  • Time appears to be passing by slowly because the whole video has been shot without any edit cuts/fades etc, it is all one continuous shot. This is inspiring for my music video creation as my group and I are creating a video to partner an emotional song; if time is seen to pass slowly then the emotions fo the audience will build up more

  • The characters other that the artist in the music video fade away - this suggests that time is passing by over a long period. This is an inspirational technique that I am interested in using in my music video because it is a successful technique for showing time going past either slowly or very fast depending on the speed of the fade out. I am keen to practice with making people fade out at different speeds to see the full effect of the technique and how achievable it is to complete

  • The artist stays in the same position for the entirity of the music video. No movement suggests the artist is sad and emotional as well as being helpless in the situation

  • The lyrics of the song are based on a true story and the performance partners the lyrics. Lyrics that are able to be related to by the audience are generally more emotional and successful. This makes me think that I will need to chose a song that has deep meaningful lyrics to make it a very successful creation as it adds more depth.

Beyonce - Love On Top

  • The choreography has been set in time with the beats of the music, this makes the movements very "punchy" and it makes each movement more recognised and eye catching. This could influence my muisic video creation; I will make th emost important movements and props etc on a beat to draw the audience's focus toward them

  • The casting has deliberately been of all men, this focusses the audience's attention on the artist who is the only woman, acting as the "main character". This could be used in my creation as it would make the artist stand out; this could also be completed by using lighting - high key lighting on the artist and dimmer, low key lighting on the other characters/performers

  • The camera cuts between close up shots and long shots. This is used because the performance and the narrative are linked by being in the same location, the long shots show the narrative and dance routine of the music video whilst the close ups are showing the artists' face and expressions whilst singing -the performance side of the music video

  • The artist is always shown in the centre of the shot, focussing the audiences attention on her. I will definitely be using this technique as the artist is the main focus and importance of the music video

Olly Murs - Dear Darlin'

  • The artists face is toward the margins of the shot, not towards the camera this symbolises that he is not focussed and may be in a weak and vulnerable position. The use of the handheld camera anchors this suggestion as it makes him seem as if he is nervous and more vulnerable. These would both be good techniques to use in my music video to ensure that the message of weakness and emotion are passed across to the viewer

  • The flashbacks/memories are a big inspiration from this music video as the audience are able to see what the artist is also seeing in his head as well as knowing fully what the lyrics are written about and why the particular emotions are being felt so strongly. I will consider to use this technique in my music video

  • The natural lighting is coming from behind the character therefore casting a shadow upon the artists face. Being in darkness with light all around him makes him appear isolated from the reast of the world as well as being in a negative frame of mind. Noticing this has made me consider how important lighting is in conveying a message as well as how easy it is to create such a meaning.

  • There is a shot at the beginning where Olly Murs drops scunches up a letter he wrote into a ball which is repeated at the end, however the girl in the video is repeating this action. The two shots were memerable because they used slow motion when the paper ball was falling. I will take this piece of information with me when I create my music video - if something is to be memorable or related back to later in the video then there must be something that makes it stand out; in this case it was the use of slow motion
