See You Again - Charlie Puth And Wiz Khalifa
This song is written in memory of Paul Walker. Due to this connection that the audience has with the song, the music video had a lot to live up to as it must convey a powerful message whereby those watching could reflect on the much loved actors life. However, it must also be written and shown in a way that can be related to by the audience if they were to also have lost a loved one.
Music Video Analysis
An establishing shot of the sunset, overlooking the sea sets the scene as positive and bright, however coming to a bad, dark ending (the darkness of the night that follows after the sunset). It is accompanied and uplifting due to the high key piano playing that would usually be associated with a nursery rhym. However, the mood is soon changed when the piano playing become diegetic sound due to being able to see Charlie Puth playing the piano, this is when the sound of the piano becomes louder and of lower, deeper sounding keys. I like the way that the music is made into diegetic sound through performance from the artist. The sadness that is arising shown by dark, nighttime shots is accompanied by a close up of the artist which shows how much emotion he is putting into the song and the meaning behind the lyrics of the song. The images of sunsets is repetitively used throughout the msuic video which anchors the meaning of the song lyrics "it's been a long day without you my friend" because sunsets come at the end of the day, it is as if the song is being written and sung on the spot with no rehersals which makes it more emotional and from the heart of the artist. I want the audience of my music video to feel a lot of emotion when watching it so that they are connected and absorbed into it and it makes them reflect upon it.
Short shots show pre-recorded images of Paul Walker, of whom the song is written about in rememberence. I particually like the shot where the gear of the car is quickly changed in time with the beat of the song dropping as it makes it more dramatic and sudden. I am inspired by this shot and I will consider including performance or narrative that is shot in a close up or extreme close up in time with a beat.
Memory fashbacks are shown in the form of pre-recorded footage which shows Paul Walker enjoying himself. It is particually effecting when the rapping artist begins as there is commly not as much meaning and soul when rapping and therefore it is difficult to make the audience feel emotion from the shots of Wiz Khalifa. It ties in well and adds emotion and depth to the performance as well as allowing the audience to connect with the artists' emotions as they see images of their friend that passed. I would like to include flashbacks and memories in my music video creation as it can emphasise the emotion from the artist in a different way other than using close up shots of their performance.
